Overview

The Gift List is a list of individual items you want to get for people, or ask for. For multiple gifts per person, simply
add another item to the list, setting the Person/Contact field again to the person's name. Gifts groups items together by Person by default, so everything you want to get a specific person will be under the header with their name on it.

When you go shopping during the holidays, you may find it useful to group the list by Store instead, so you don't forget something at a particular store. You can do this by changing the view to "Group by Store".

Add Values to Dictionaries

Dictionaries

Dictionaries are used to remember things that you've entered into the app before. This includes entire items, and individual field values.
Dictionaries drive most of the pick lists and type ahead suggestions in Gifts when you're entering a List Item. (Pictured below)

You can manually add and delete values from a dictionary, just like in
List View.

Look for Dictionary Button on the Editor Toolbar when setting a field value. It will take you right to the dictionary.

or just tap the Settings button from List View, Then Look for the "Autofill and Pick List Values" section.

Keep in mind that deleting a Dictionary Value will blank out the Value field for any item which was using it. Similarly, renaming the Value in the dictionary will rename it for all items which are using that Value.

From
List View, tap the blue action button.
This will give you the option to email or print all the items which you can currently see on the list. Hidden Items and Collapsed Groups will not be included. If you've filtered the list by a group, then only those items will be emailed or printed.

Examples of the options are below.

Customize a View

Views consist of one or more Grouping Properties, one or more sorting properties, and an optional item layout and color scheme which can override the list's default behavior. Whenever you view the list, a view is in charge of ordering items and grouping them together. The Example on the right is grouped by the "Store" property, and Sorted by the "Item" Description Property.

You can customize views, or create new ones to group a list's items together however you want.

To Edit a view:

Tap the purple settings button while viewing the list.

*Note the currently selected view has a checkmark by it.

Tap Edit.

Tap a View to edit it or tap Add New View... to open the Edit View Screen:

Grouping Hierarchy

You can specify one or more properties in the Grouping Hierarchy section to make the view group similar items together. If multiple grouping properties are specified, only one is visible at a time.

The example below is a custom view which groups a Gift List grouped by two properties: Occasion, then Person.

Tapping a group header in
List View will filter the list by the value (Store) you tap on, and then reveal matching items grouped by the next property (Section).

If there are multiple Grouping properties, then you can use the move handle to change the order in which they are applied.

Group Options

In addition to specifying the Item Property to group on, several other options are avaiable when grouping by a specific property

Filtering Includes "Not Set"

When set to "On" this setting causes items which don't have a value set for the Current Grouping property to be included then you filter by any other value for that property.

This is useful for cases like "Store" where not setting an item's store field means that you can get the item at any store. Hence, when you filter by a particular store (A), all the items where Store isn't set are included. (B)

Show Empty Groups

This Setting Controls if (and when) Empty Groups are showed in List View. it is recommended that this should be Never, unless the Group Property doesn't have alot of possible values.

The options are
  • Always - All Groups that exist in the dictionary are shown all the time, even if no items are in the group. This can be useful if you are filing items in the list.
  • When Editing- Groups without items are only showed when List View is in Edit Mode. This can be useful because it allows you to drag items by the move hangle to a different group, even if that group is empty.
  • Never
  • - (Default) - Empty Groups are always hidden.

Automatic Sorting

The Automatic Sorting section lets specify one or more item properties to order list items by. Sorting is applied within any groups which may be specified.

If there are multiple Sorting properties, then you can use the move handle to change the order in which they are applied.

Sort Options

When specifying a sorting property, you can specify the direction the items are sorted in.

Override List Layout

By default, the Layout for an individual item is specified at the list level. However, if you want to link this view to a specific item layout, then set this to On. Then tap the Sample Row Layout which appears to pick different one.

Item Layouts

Gifts comes with at least two different Item Layouts. You can change the layout for the list, or create a new layout by tapping on this option.

Most Spreadsheet programs can export to CSV or tab delimited formats. You can import a file of this type directly into Gifts if you want to enter items on your computer. Once you've created a CSV or TSV file from your computer, place it either
on the device via iTunes, on Dropbox, or email it to the device.

If you emailed it to your device, open the mail on your device, press and hold the file in Mail on the device, then pick 'Open in Gifts'.

If you instead placed the file on Dropbox, or on the Device via iTunes:

Map Fields Screen

When importing spreadsheet data, you will be prompted by the Mapping Screen to pick which fields to move data into. This screen lets you specify which item fields for the target list (Left side) to populate with the source data (Right Side). By default Gifts will try to pick the correct fields based on the source column name and type, but you can override this, or specify settings which the app couldn't figure out. Just tap on a row to pick a different source property.

Tap Done when you're finished.

Export a List or Template

To Export a List's Items to a File, or an Empty List Template which can be used to populate a list from a Spreadsheet Program:

Tap the blue action button to open the Export Screen. Pick the Export Type.

  • Tab Separated Value (tsv) - Also known as a tab delimited text file. Some spreadsheet programs may give this file type a '.txt' file extension. Gifts requires the extension to be '.tsv' to recognize the file. Again, this format has a header row, and then one item per line.
  • PDF this exports all fields for selected items to a PDF file, including Pictures. The PDF can be used to print, and PDF's that have been generated by Gifts, can also be used to reimport the items into an Gifts instance on another device. This is the Only Export format which includes Pictures!

Then Tap the method you want to save the file with. The options are

  • Once a combination is set, the Backup, Restore, Export, Import, and Combo Lock functions will require it.

Once you enter a combination, this screen is displayed which lets you pick what is protected. You can also change or disable the combination from this screen.

Adding Items

Tap the green + button to
add a new item by typing. Press and hold it to add items from a file or the list's dictionary .

Edit Schedule Screen

This screen lets you specify when a scheduled item is added to the list, and the behavior if the item is already on the list.

Schedule

This field controls the type of recurrence for the item. Options are:
  • Once- The item will be added to the list once (in the future) and will never recur.
  • Daily-The item will recur every x number of days until the End Date.
  • Weekly-The item will recur every x number of weeks on the Days of the week which are specified until the End Date.
  • Monthly-The item will recur every x months until the end date. This can be based on the day of the month, or the day of the week. Both are figured based on the Start Date field.
  • Yearly-Repeats every X years on the month and day of the Start Date.

Repeat Every

This is the x in the description of the Schedule field. For example: if you picked Daily for Schedule, then setting this field to 2 would cause the item to repeat every other day.

Start Date

This is the date and time that the item will first be added. If it's in the past or today, then one or more items may be added immediately to the list. This field is occasionally used as a reference point for some of the Schedule types. This is especially true of the Time portion of the field. It also is used when setting Due Dates on items that support them.

End Date

The last date and time the schedule can occur. After this time passes, the schedule will be deleted.

Days

Days of the week (for Weekly schedules) which the item occurs on. This lets you schedule things like Every Tuesday and Thursday.

Duplicate Behavior

If an instance of the item is already on the list, how should the app deal with it? Options are
  • Uncheck/Merge - Unchecks the item if it's there already, merges the item together with the existing one. (Generally this increments numeric fields like qty.)
  • Always Add - Adds the item again regardless of if it's on the list already.

Add Item in Advance

The number of days in advance of the scheduled time to add the item to the list. This is useful if you want a reminder to show up on your list BEFORE it is due, so you have some time to address the item. Any due dates associated with the item will still be based on the Start Date field.

Editor Toolbar Buttons

When editing or adding an item, there is an Editor Toolbar which appears which always provides the follow buttons:

Start editing the next field which has an editor associated with it.

Start editing the previous field which has an editor associated with it.

Show Help specific to the field that you're editing.

Stop editing, and hide the keyboard / editor

Additionally, there are several other buttons which can appear on the toolbar depending on the field that you're editing. These buttons are used to switch the type of editor or input method that is used for the field.

Favorite Flag

The favorite flag lets you flag the item as a favorite. Additionally, it marks the cooresponding dictionary item as a favorite which is useful when you
pick items from the dictionary.

Views

Views control how items are grouped together and how they're sorted.

Grouping and Sorting

On the right, you can see the list of items is broken up by Store. That is to say it is "Grouped" by the Store field.

Items that share the same value for whatever the current Grouping Propery is are all in the same section.

"Automatic Sorting" is applied within the Section. In the case of the aforementioned image, the list is sorted by the item Description.

If you press and hold the button on the left of any Group Header, then you can optionally
Reorder the Groups

Although Views support multiple levels of Grouping, you have to Tap on a Group Header in order reveal the next level in the grouping hierarchy. This is also useful for filtering the list to just see a set of items.

The app ships with several precreated views, but you can also create your own.

Views control how items are grouped together and how they're sorted.

To change the Current View:
  1. Tap the purple Settings button when viewing the list in List View.

  2. Tap the first row "View"

  3. The current view will have a checkmark next to it. Tap on a different view to select it.
  4. or
